Tombstone Tuesday - The Cemetery Gates Pt. 1
I thought we'd do something a little different for this regular segment, so here's our first Cemetery Gates edition of Tombstone Tuesday!
This week, it's the gates of Niagara Falls' Drummond Hill Cemetery on Lundy's Lane . . .

A gravestone marker in Los Angeles' Hollywood Forever cemetery. Once again, the name "Graves" in a place full of graves is spookily appropriate. The palm trees seem a bit out of place (cypress is the traditional tree of choice for cemeteries), but then, it is California.

Here's a row of very old grave markers from Port Colborne's St. Joseph's Cemetery that Niki took a picture of a few years ago.

Once again, like the 'Fear' and 'Lament' stones in St. Catharines' Victoria Lawn Cemetery, I happened to come across this gravemarker with the name 'Skelton' that just seemed all too appropriate in a place filled with skeletons.

Seeing as how Niki and I are now residents of the Niagara Region, I figured we should head over to Niagara Falls to pay tribute to one of Canada's most famous and courageous women, Laura Secord.During the War of 1812, she ran through twenty miles of wilderness and harsh terrain to warn the British forces of an impending American attack. A warning that resulted in the American invaders' defeat and the capture of their leader.
To Perpetuate
The Name and Fame of
LAURA SECORD,
who walked alone nearly 20
miles by a circuitous, difficult
and perilous route through woods
and swamps and over miry roads
to warn a British outpost at
De Cew's Falls of an intended attack
and thereby enabled Lieut. FitzGibbon,
on the 24th June, 1813, with less
than 50 men of H. M. 49th Regt.,
about 15 militiamen and a small
force of Six Nation and other Indians
under Captains William Johnson Kerr
and Dominique Ducharme, to surprise
and attack the enemy at Beechwoods
(or Beaver Dams), and after a short
engagement to capture Col. Boerstler
of the U. S. Army and his entire force
of 542 men with two field pieces.

Niki and I just went on another cemetery stroll recently, this time through Niagara Falls' historic Drummond Hill Cemetery on Lundy's Lane, and while we were there I happened to see a gravestone that is very nearly the twin of the one I posted a picture of last week. In fact, besides the name, the picture I took is almost exactly the same, except the ground is white with snow instead of green with grass. The shape of that marker still makes me think of both crystal balls and chess pieces, though. Maybe crystal balls as chess pieces . . . all on a board of green and white . . . hmmm . . .

Something about the perfect sphere of polished granite resting on the top of this marker in St. Catharines' Victoria Lawn Cemetery just called my attention to it. I'm not exactly sure why, though.Maybe because it reminded me of a crystal ball, like the Palantíri of Tolkien's Lord of the Rings saga or Maerlyn's Rainbow in Stephen King's Dark Tower cycle. Or perhaps because the gravestone as a whole looks a bit like a life-sized pawn on a wizard's chessboard, like the one in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.

Though spelled slightly different, this gravestone in St. Catharines' Victoria Lawn Cemetery instantly reminded me of the Marvel Comics character Daimon Hellstrom (aka: The Son of Satan, Hellstorm). He was first introduced in the pages of the original Ghost Rider comic back in the '70s, but is probably best remembered as a member of The Defenders and husband to teammate Patsy Walker (aka: Hellcat).

This is one of my favorite gravestones and it was the very first that Niki and I stopped and admired while in Los Angeles' Hollywood Forever Cemetery. Responsible for voicing nearly every Looney Tunes character (including such unforgettable cartoon titans as Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and Porky Pig) Mel Blanc truly was "The Man of a Thousand Voices." He was also the voice of other memorable cartoon characters like Woody Woodpecker, Mister Magoo, Dino and Barney Rubble on The Flintstones, Mister Spacely on The Jetsons and one of my all-time favorites, The Do-Do from the 1938 Warner Bros. cartoon short Porky in Wackyland (which was remade in color for the 1949 Merrie Melodies' Dough For The Do-Do).

Like the "Fear" gravestone from last month, this grave marker in St. Catharines' Victoria Lawn Cemetery with the name "Lament" struck me as being eerily appropriate for the setting.

I think it's hard to look at this gravestone from Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles, California and not be reminded of the "optional weeping widow service" offered in the The Simpsons twelfth-season episode "Tennis the Menace." It was definitely what Niki and I were thinking when we took these photos.I even managed to find an audio clip of the exact scene at the Last Exit to Springfield fansite.

Sadly, this week's tombstone is fresh and comes from our own backyard. The day after South Park aired it's "Bass to Mouth" episode last month, I happened to notice one particular squirrel on our street had a distinctive mottling to the new winter coat that was growing in. Between the striking new coat and the hilariously memorable South Park episode the night before, I instantly decided to dub this squirrel "Wikileaks." Unfortunately, I discovered Wikileaks in front of our driveway last Tuesday around 6 pm, obviously struck by a passing car. It had happened within the hour since I had just been out tossing peanuts to all the squirrels that nest in our front tree. Feeling somewhat responsible (if not for the nuts I'd thrown, Wiki might not have been anywhere near), I thought it was only right to give the poor guy a proper and respectful send-off.

My grandparents' gravestone in Margaree Valley, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Unfortunately, I haven't been out to the East Coast since Grandpa's funeral in 2006, but my sister and her fiancée, Mike were there this past month with my Mom to plan their wedding for next year. While they were there, she grabbed this shot of the finished headstone. Thanks Cassandra!

Here's a grave marker from St. Catharines' Victoria Lawn Cemetery that caught my eye. What could be more terrifying than having to face Fear itself in a graveyard? I think I know what Blue Oyster Cult would tell me . . .

This gravestone in Los Angeles' Hollywood Forever Cemetery is a reproduction of Antonio Canova's sculpture Psyche Revived by Cupid's Kiss. The original was commissioned in 1787 and completed 6 years later in 1793. It was later acquired in 1800 by Joachim Murat and was donated by him to the Louvre Museum in Paris, France in 1824.

The Most Pleasant and Delectable Tale of the Marriage of Cupid and Psyche first appeared circa 150 A.D., in the middle of a series of stories told in Apuleius' The Golden Ass (originally titled Metamorphoses) and is essentially a reversal of the classic story of Orpheus and Eurydice: the lover having to descend into the Underworld in order to reclaim his beloved.

A word of advice for the groundskeeper of St. Catharines' Victoria Lawn Cemetery: If you trim some of that shrubbery back, your Johnson will look much bigger.
